Description

Current recruitment is for a Landscape Architect 4; however, the position may be underfilled as a Landscape Architect 3 or Landscape Architect 2 depending upon the experience level and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Landscape Architect 2

This is intermediate level professional landscape architectural work performed in the office and/or field in connection with the planning, design, construction, and inspection of parks and related facilities. Assignments are received from the Park Planning and Development Manager who defines the scope of the work, reviews the work in progress and upon completion. The work is characterized by the application of expanded professional landscape architectural expertise encompassing both theoretical concepts and operational considerations gained through directly related experience.

Landscape Architect 3

This is fully skilled professional landscape architectural work performed in the office and/or field in connection with the design, construction, and inspection of a wide variety of parks and related facilities incorporating repairs, alterations, and revisions. Assignments are received from the Park Planning and Development Manager who generally defines the scope of the work; and reviews the work for conformance with objectives. The work is characterized by the exercise of considerable technical and professional judgment, the broader application of professional landscape architectural expertise and proficiency in the operational and procedural aspects of the work, and the increased complexity of the projects.

Landscape Architect 4

This is advanced-level professional landscape architectural and project supervision work performed in the office and/or field in connection with the planning, design management and construction of a wide variety of Parks projects. Assignments are received from the Park Planning and Development Manager and the work involves the application of independent professional judgment to define the project; determine the best methods of addressing the situation(s), including the assignment of project components to consultants, contractors and lower level staff; and the professional certification of the results. The work is performed under general direction.



Requirements

At the Landscape Architect 2 level:
  • Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture or a closely related field; AND
  • One (1) year of professional landscape architectural experience designing, constructing, and inspecting Parks construction equivalent to the Landscape Architect 1 level with the City of Madison.
The successful candidate may be hired at the Landscape Architect 3 or Landscape Architect 4 classification level based upon experience; to be determined at the time of hire depending upon the candidate's relevant work experience and overall qualifications.
In order to be considered at the Landscape Architect 4 classification level:

  • Three (3) years of professional landscape architectural experience designing, constructing, and inspecting Parks construction, with at least one (1) year of project coordination and leadership responsibilities. 
If an applicant does not possess the experience listed above, HR will review the application materials to determine if the applicant possesses the following equivalent experience: 
Two (2) years experience in applying the following:
  • Principles, theories, and practices of landscape architecture, particular as they relate to the planning, design and coordination of parks public works construction projects.
  • Methods and techniques associated with the construction and inspection of public works projects.
  • Computer software applicable to the duties of the position.

Familiarity with the following:

  • Procedural aspects of the City's contracting and capital budgeting processes.
  • Application of landscape architectural theories.
  • Conduct basic land surveys and establish design parameters. 
  • Perform computer-aided design and spreadsheet analysis.
